Smoking can be a very difficult thing for some people to give up. There are various reports about the effects of smoking, and it can depend greatly on the health and lifestyle of the individual as to how the habit will affect them. Some people live to 100 years or more and smoke most of that time with little or no effect. Others die of lung cancer or other respiratory diseases caused by smoking in their 30’s and 40’s.
I started smoking when I was very young (5 or 6 years old) and stopped a few years ago of my own desire after 20 years of smoking. I do not have any apparent effects from smoking, but I know my breathing is easier now that I have stopped. It was not difficult for me to stop because it was in my own time and my own program. But if you try to force stopping on someone it can be even more difficult for them and for you.
Perhaps the best thing is not to try and pressure your Dad. My father died in a traffic accident when I was very young, so it would not have mattered if he gave up smoking or not (and he did smoke quite heavilly). The point is, your Dad may not be affected by smoking, so enjoy his life with you as much as you can, just in case some other thing takes him from you. In time he may well come to understand that smoking is not the healthiest habit to have and he may give it away of his own volition.
